Amazon's AI-upgraded Alexa+ is now available in the UK through an early access program, marking its first expansion outside North America.
Pricing follows the US model: free for Prime subscribers, £19.99/month for everyone else. Echo device buyers also get free access during the early access period. The assistant works on Echo speakers, Fire TV, and the Alexa app, with browser support planned for later.
Alexa+ is Amazon's attempt to bring large language model capabilities to its voice assistant. The headline feature is conversational context that carries between devices - you can start a request on your kitchen Echo and continue it on your bedroom one without repeating yourself. That's a meaningful step up from standard Alexa, which treats every interaction as a fresh start.
Amazon says UK-specific optimization involved local engineers, linguists, and speech scientists using reinforcement learning (a method where the AI improves through trial and feedback) and regional embeddings to handle British accents and dialects. Launch integrations include OpenTable, JustEat, and Treatwell for recommendations, plus news from The Independent, The Guardian, Press Association, and Future Publishing.
The UK launch is a test of whether Alexa+ can justify its price outside Amazon's home market. The free Prime tier removes the barrier for Amazon's most loyal customers, but £19.99/month is a steep ask when ChatGPT Plus costs £20 and does far more. Amazon is betting that tight hardware integration and hands-free convenience make up the difference.
