Apple's iOS 27 Siri Redesign Includes Standalone App to Rival ChatGPT

Siri has been the weakest major AI assistant for years. New renders of Apple's planned iOS 27 overhaul, covered by TechCrunch, suggest Apple knows it and is finally doing something substantial about it.

The most significant detail in the renders: a dedicated, standalone Siri app. Right now, Siri exists as a system overlay - you summon it with a gesture or voice command, it attempts to answer, and then it disappears. A standalone app means Apple is building toward a persistent interface where you can have a real back-and-forth conversation, browse past sessions, and treat Siri more like a tool you open intentionally rather than a reflex you trigger. That's how most people already use ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.

The designs also show a substantially redesigned Siri experience at the system level. The visual language appears to be a significant departure from the glowing orb that's defined Siri's identity since 2011 - something closer to what you'd expect from a modern chat app.

What Apple Is Up Against

ChatGPT had over 100 million weekly active users as of early 2026. Claude, Gemini, and Copilot have carved out real daily-use audiences. Meanwhile, Siri's reputation took repeated hits in 2024 and 2025 as Apple Intelligence features shipped late and underdelivered on the promises Apple made at WWDC 2024.

A standalone app addresses one specific gap: habit formation. People who use ChatGPT daily have it pinned to their home screen. Siri has always required a gesture or wake word, which keeps it out of the natural flow of how people reach for AI tools. Making it a tappable app is a small change with real behavioral implications.

What the renders don't reveal is whether Apple is fixing the deeper problems - Siri's reasoning quality, its accuracy on multi-step tasks, its integration with third-party apps. New UI doesn't solve model quality. Those answers will have to wait.

The WWDC 2026 Question

Apple typically holds WWDC in early June, meaning an official iOS 27 reveal is likely days away. The real question isn't whether Siri gets a visual refresh - it's what Apple discloses about the underlying AI model powering it. Apple's deal with OpenAI to surface ChatGPT responses inside Siri has always looked like a temporary bridge. A serious iOS 27 push signals Apple wants to own more of this experience itself, which would make the OpenAI partnership's future scope worth watching closely.
