The Block CEO outlined a vision where AI handles the coordination and reporting tasks that currently require layers of middle management, according to Bloomberg. Block - parent company of Square, Cash App, and Tidal - isn't the first company to thin its management ranks, but Dorsey is unusually direct about naming AI as the reason.
The logic is straightforward: middle managers often exist to aggregate information upward and distribute decisions downward. If AI can summarize team output, flag problems, and route decisions automatically, you need fewer people doing that translation work. Individual contributors would report more directly to senior leadership, with AI tools filling the gap.
