ChatGPT Gets Write Access to Google and Microsoft Productivity Apps

OpenAI announced on March 18, 2026 that its Google and Microsoft app integrations within ChatGPT now support write actions, transforming the assistant from a read-only companion into one that can actively modify documents, send emails, and manage calendars. Previously, ChatGPT could only read and summarize content from connected productivity apps.

Users can now draft and send emails through Microsoft Outlook, create and edit documents in Google Docs, build spreadsheets in Google Sheets, and schedule meetings through Outlook Calendar and Google Calendar - all from within the ChatGPT interface. The feature effectively positions ChatGPT as an AI-powered command center for daily office work.

Security controls are built in from the start. Write actions are disabled by default and must be explicitly enabled by workspace administrators through Settings, then Apps, then Manage actions per app. For Microsoft integrations, Entra admins will need to review and approve updated app scopes before new users can connect.

The update intensifies competition with Microsoft's own Copilot and Google's Gemini integrations, both of which already have deep write access to their respective productivity suites. By bridging both ecosystems from a single interface, OpenAI is betting that users prefer a platform-agnostic assistant over one locked to a single vendor's tools.
