Claude Can Now Generate Charts and Diagrams Directly in Conversations

Anthropic just shipped a feature Claude users have been asking about for months: the chatbot can now generate charts, diagrams, and other custom visuals right inside your conversation.

The key detail here is where the visuals appear. Previously, Claude could produce code-based visualizations, but they lived in the artifacts side panel, separate from the flow of conversation. Now, when Claude determines a visual would help explain something, it inserts the image directly inline with its text response. Ask about quarterly revenue trends, and you get a chart woven into the explanation rather than tucked away in a sidebar you might not notice.

How It Works in Practice

Claude decides when to generate a visual based on conversational context. If you are discussing data, workflows, system architecture, or anything that benefits from a diagram, Claude will produce one without being explicitly asked. You can also request visuals directly, of course.

The types of visuals include bar charts, line graphs, flowcharts, process diagrams, and other standard data visualizations. This puts Claude closer to what ChatGPT and Gemini already offer with their built-in charting tools, though each implementation handles it differently. ChatGPT leans on its Code Interpreter to run Python plotting libraries; Gemini generates images natively. Claude's approach of contextually inserting visuals inline sits somewhere between the two.

Who This Actually Helps

For people using Claude as a work tool rather than a toy, inline visuals solve a real friction point. Consultants building slide decks, analysts explaining data to non-technical stakeholders, students working through complex concepts - all of these use cases benefit from having the visual right next to the explanation. Copy-pasting from a side panel was never hard, but it broke the conversational flow.

This is also a meaningful upgrade for Claude's competitive position. Text-only responses have been a common complaint from users switching between Claude and ChatGPT, where visual output has been standard for over a year. Anthropic closing that gap removes one of the easier reasons to default to a competitor.

The feature is rolling out now to Claude users. Anthropic has not specified whether it is limited to paid tiers or available on the free plan.
