Google's AI Mode - the search experience that gives you a detailed AI-generated answer instead of a list of blue links - is getting ads. Google confirmed the change at Google Marketing Live on May 21, according to a post on the Google Ads blog.
The move was predictable. AI Mode launched as a premium-feeling, ad-free zone inside Google Search. For users, it felt cleaner. For Google, it was leaving money on the table at a moment when the company faces real competitive pressure from ChatGPT and other AI search alternatives that have been pulling high-intent queries away from Google's core business.
For advertisers, this is mostly good news in the short term - more inventory, potentially lower cost-per-click while the format is new, and a chance to appear in a context where users are in an active research mindset. Brands already running Search and Shopping campaigns should see their ads become eligible to appear in AI Mode responses without significant rework, consistent with how Google has historically expanded ad surfaces.
For publishers and SEO professionals, it's a worse deal. AI Mode already reduces clicks to organic results by answering questions directly. Now those same answer surfaces are becoming paid inventory. The organic real estate that remains is getting squeezed from two directions at once.
What Advertisers Should Track
Google hasn't released granular placement or auction mechanics beyond what was shown at the event. Smart advertisers will want to watch their search impression share and conversion rate data closely over the next 30 to 60 days to understand how AI Mode placements behave. Early data from AI Overviews - the summarized answer boxes Google added to standard search results - showed click-through rates differing significantly from traditional search ad positions.
Anyone running paid search needs clean conversion tracking and tight campaign structures. As Google adds more AI-generated surfaces between users and landing pages, the advertisers who have their measurement in order will have a clearer read on what's actually working.
