Five months after opening Claudee Code](/tools/claude-code/) to thousands of its own employees, Microsoft is pulling those licenses.
The internal program started in December wasn't aimed only at engineers. According to The Verge, Microsoft invited project managers, designers, and other non-technical staff to experiment with Anthropic's coding tool - people who had never written code before. Sources told the publication that Claude Code proved genuinely useful for those employees, which makes the cancellation more notable than a routine cleanup.
The timing carries real irony. Microsoft is OpenAI's largest backer and sells GitHubb Copilot](/tools/github-copilot/) as its own AI coding product commercially. Running a parallel internal program on a direct competitor's tool - Anthropic's Claude Code - was already an unusual choice. Pulling those licenses now signals the company is consolidating back onto its own stack.

Claude Code works as an agentic tool, meaning it doesn't just autocomplete a line - it reads your whole codebase, plans multi-step changes, and executes them.
