Three of OpenAI's most senior leaders are stepping away from their roles simultaneously, according to an internal memo first reported by The Verge.
Fidji Simo, who holds the title of CEO of AGI deployment, announced she will take medical leave "for the next several weeks" to address a relapse of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), a condition she disclosed when joining the company last August. During her absence, co-founder Greg Brockman will take over the product organization.
The same memo revealed two other departures. COO Brad Lightcap, one of OpenAI's longest-tenured executives, is moving to a new "special projects" role reporting directly to Sam Altman. His primary focus will be a joint venture with private equity firms to sell AI software to enterprises. Denise Dresser, the former Slack CEO who recently joined as Chief Revenue Officer, will absorb some of Lightcap's operational responsibilities.
Chief Marketing Officer Kate Rouch is also stepping back to focus on cancer recovery. Gary Briggs, formerly Meta's CMO, will fill her role on an interim basis.
None of the three are described as permanently leaving. But losing your AGI deployment lead, COO, and CMO in a single announcement is a lot of institutional knowledge walking out the door at once, even temporarily. OpenAI has been through executive upheaval before, most notably the board crisis of late 2023, and has shown it can operate through turbulence. Still, this comes at a moment when the company is aggressively expanding its enterprise business and navigating the transition from research lab to commercial juggernaut.
The reshuffle concentrates more direct reports under Altman and elevates newer hires like Dresser into broader operational roles. That is either a sign of a maturing organization distributing leadership, or a company that keeps cycling through the C-suite faster than it can stabilize. Probably a bit of both.
