Chrome Adds Reusable AI Prompt "Skills" to Gemini on Desktop

Google Chrome now lets you save your favorite Gemini prompts as reusable "Skills" and fire them across any open tabs with a click. The feature is rolling out on Chrome desktop, and it addresses something every regular AI user runs into: the same handful of prompts get retyped from memory dozens of times a week.

The mechanic is simple. Run a Gemini prompt you want to keep, save it as a Skill, and it joins a personal library inside Chrome. From there, you select any tab or set of tabs and apply the Skill instantly. Google's own example is a recipe page where you keep asking for ingredient substitutes - same prompt, different page, every time. Skills turns that into a one-click action.

The Practical Case

Most of the daily productivity value people actually get from AI tools comes from a short list of repeated prompts: summarize this, extract the action items, rewrite this in plain language, give me the key numbers. Right now, people manage those prompts through a notes app, a browser extension, or just muscle memory. Embedding them directly in the browser - attached to the AI tool doing the work - is a more sensible place for them to live.

That said, this is Chrome-only and Gemini-only. Users who rely on ChatGPT or Claude for daily browser work won't see any benefit here. Both of those have their own approaches to prompt reuse - ChatGPT through custom instructions, Claude through Projects - but neither is baked into a browser at the OS level.

Google's Bigger Play

Skills is another step in Google's strategy of making Chrome materially more capable than competing browsers for Gemini users. Tabs, sidebar, History search, and now reusable AI workflows - each feature is individually minor, but together they create meaningful friction for switching away. For someone already deep in Google's tools, this is a genuine daily-workflow improvement. For everyone else, it's a reminder that the browser wars now include AI features as a differentiator.
