How to Set Up Chrome's AI Skills: Premade Options and Building Your Own

AI news: How to Set Up Chrome's AI Skills: Premade Options and Building Your Own

Chrome's new Skills feature in the Gemini sidebar comes with several premade options ready to use: a YouTube video summarizer, a recipe protein optimizer, and additional presets for common browsing tasks.

To get started, open the Gemini sidebar in Chrome - the icon on the right side of the toolbar - and look for the Skills section. Premade Skills appear automatically. To build a custom one, write a prompt describing what you want Gemini to do with the current page, give it a name, and save it.

The protein recipe Skill illustrates how these work: land on any recipe page, click the Skill, and Gemini reworks ingredient ratios to increase protein content. The page context feeds into your saved prompt automatically - no manual copying required.

If you currently copy web content into ChatGPT to reformat or summarize it, a custom Skill covers that same use case without leaving the tab. You write the instruction once, name it, and apply it to any page going forward.

There's no code involved. The main challenge is identifying which of your regular workflows match the "read this page, do this specific thing" pattern that Skills handles well. Start with a task you repeat daily on web content - whatever prompt you'd normally type by hand.
